| DataCAD® Instrumental in Success of ABC TV’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” Popular AEC CADD Software Delivers Under Tight Deadlines Avon, Connecticut – September 30, 2004 -- DATACAD LLC announced today that its DataCAD software technology was chosen by Bassenian/Lagoni Architects (BLA) of Newport Beach, CA to create the home showcased in an upcoming episode of ABC's “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition”. For this highly-rated one-hour primetime show, ABC-TV worked in conjunction with HomeAid America — a national non-profit organization that builds shelters for the temporarily homeless. BLA, along with national residential builder Shea Homes, was approached to donate their time, resources, talent, and labor for the biggest extreme makeover project to date — the complete razing and reconstruction of the Garay family home located in South Central Los Angeles. In a race against the clock, building teams of more than 300 workers were shuttled to the construction site 24/7 in an effort to complete the extreme makeover within five days and nine hours while the Garay family was away, courtesy of ABC-TV. The story began two years ago when a stray bullet killed the mother of Johnny Garay, the young homeowner chosen for the makeover project. Due to that tragic event, Garay's five half-siblings joined his family that already included his wife and four young children, creating a total household of 11. Forced to move into a run-down home situated in a poor inner-city neighborhood, the Garays struggled to maintain their positive outlook. But it soon became evident that family illnesses were the result of their badly deteriorating home. According to the show's senior producers, renovation was not an option. The existing home, by all accounts, was in terrible condition, with broken windows, no central heating, inadequate plumbing, and mold growing on the walls. "Since the current structure was simply not suitable for occupancy, we needed to create a new home, literally, from the ground up under very tight deadlines," says Ken Niemerski, principal and project manager with Bassenian/Lagoni Architects. “Knowing that, we chose DataCAD version 10 to exclusively produce the design and construction drawings for the new Garay family residence. The software technology quickly enabled us to resolve some unique and challenging design difficulties, resulting from the narrow lot and incredible time constraints.” “As a CAD technology designed by architects, we find DataCAD offers a highly intuitive interface that enables us to work in a highly efficient manner,” continues Niemerski. “Our firm has used DataCAD since 1987. We’ve relied on it for hundreds of projects, and for the development of our extensive library of customized templates and drawing files, which once again allowed us to quickly create and modify the house plans." Even on site, DataCAD enabled BLA to make crucial, last-minute design changes and clarifications. “During those final days of round-the-clock construction, I lived on site in an RV, equipped with only a laptop computer and printer,” says Niemerski, "and the technology once again provided us with the capability to instantly communicate with our clients and builders in the field." To the extreme surprise of the returning Garay family, their new home provided 4,783 square-feet of living space on three floors. "In all, over 1,500 craftsmen were on board with this project," says Niemerski. "And DataCAD worked seamlessly with all building teams and consultants, even those utilizing other CAD programs." "As a company,” says Mark Madura, president of DATACAD, “we are very proud that our DataCAD technology was instrumental in the successful design of a new home for such a deserving family. We understand the challenges and continually strive to deliver to architecture firms like Bassenian/Lagoni Architects a true workhorse technology that can pull its weight and any construction project along effortlessly. We are happy for their success." The show is set to premiere on Sunday, October 3, 2004 on ABC-TV. Please check your local listings for times and channels.
